VAN GODFREY – The Story
How It All Began
2023, in a Cologne apartment.
I had given my partner a t-shirt for her birthday – self-designed, printed at a copy shop. Beth Dutton from Yellowstone, with a striking slogan. We both love the series, and I wanted to give her something special.
But after two washes, the shirt looked like a rag: stretched out, faded colors.
Why a t-shirt in the first place? Because it was cool, individual, and a statement – and because I couldn't find anything online that met this standard. Only interchangeable prints. No story. Soulless mass-produced goods.
At that moment I decided: I'll do it myself.

The First Designs
I wanted to create garments that are more than just aesthetics – that have meaning, something you can identify with. Better fabric quality. Better cut. Best print quality. As durable as possible, sustainable, consciously produced – the opposite of cheap fast fashion.
Initially, I only designed for myself and my partner. I had no intention of turning it into a business.
But my very first motif, a reinterpretation of Gustav Klimt's Bloch-Bauer II, sparked my creativity. I gave an old, classic painting a new aesthetic and interpretation – and in doing so transformed old art into modern statement wear.
From this fascination with art, statements, and depth, I created more designs in the months that followed.
That was my first hurdle overcome. I had no idea what challenges were still to come.
The Transformation
The next two years were intense. I designed over 30 designs and quickly realized: Etsy, where I had a shop for a short time, wasn't the right place for what I wanted to build. I needed room for my vision – a place that shows what VAN GODFREY is. My own individual shop.
The biggest challenge for me remained creating designs that meet my high artistic standards while conveying the brand's identity.
I wanted my customers to experience a WOW moment – something outstanding, exclusive, profound.
Eventually, I decided to design and release just one design for my first drop. I wanted an entirely new motif - and found it through my experience with Vibe Coding, AI-assisted software development. A revolution that democratized software creation all at once.
I wanted to capture that incredible feeling; when you're in the flow at 3 AM and the software almost builds itself while you watch.
For this, I worked on a design for a long time, only to discard it and ultimately finalize something completely different.
The result is an exceptional motif for my first drop: "THE FLOW". T-Shirt and Hoodie. Strictly limited edition.
I showed the shirts and the hoodie to my closest people. They thought it was cool and asked what it meant. I wanted it not to be obvious. My partner was the first to wear the design. She wears all my designs – she's my biggest fan and my toughest critic at the same time.
That's when I knew: This works.
More drops will follow. Each one limited. Each one with a story and meaning.
Why do I keep going?
Because it fulfills me to create something that inspires.
Because I want to create clothing with motifs that tell a story and carry meaning. Something that subtly expresses who you are and what you stand for.
Because I've always wanted to build a brand. Not just any brand, but one where I can creatively realize myself.
Because I believe in the following sentence:
"The ultimate goal is getting paid to be yourself."
This brand is part of my identity. I am what VAN GODFREY radiates.
The Name
The VAN in VAN GODFREY is a homage to the golden age of the Netherlands – to rebels like Rembrandt, van Gogh, and Vermeer. Artists who were ahead of their time and never conformed.
"Godfrey" comes from the Old Germanic Godafried – "divine peace."
For me, it stands for inner strength, freedom of thought, the courage to self-realization, and independence.
Then as now:
Great art arises when people stay true to themselves – not follow the mainstream.
VAN GODFREY connects past and future, art and identity, tradition and rebellion. A name for people who don't hide – but embody their own truth.
I founded VAN GODFREY because I see fashion as a medium for self-realization.
Today we work with selected partners to translate this idea into wearable art.
The Intention
VAN GODFREY creates timeless artifacts with depth. Wearable art for sovereign people.
Designed for those who embody their convictions.
Not as a signal for others. As an immutable fact of who they are.
